A NOTE

by CAROLYN CHEN

These text pieces began as prompts for people improvising with undetermined resources, and grew into a collection mostly open to people without specific musical instruments or training, but often drawing from musical tradition. Some of these pieces ask for everyday materials like clothing, lights, or marbles. Some require just willing participants with attention and imagination. They sit in a tradition with Fluxus and Scratch Orchestra scores, recipes, and children’s games. They could be performed in the mind, though trying something out by moving in the world with all its specificity seems more fun.
