At the edge of your town, a salt mine rings with activity. The rising dust pillows in an extradimentional arc, turning the mountain into a spaceship. The women who crack the geodes wear masks of pink almond flour sacks.
A woman lays in the puddle of the starcamp, salt like fingerprints over the [[nausea]] on her skin.<<audio "start" stop>>

You are an [[engineer]] sent to expand the mine, spiral it downward in a faux-iron mass of plastic rubbed with metal filings. You are being paid.
You are a [[researcher]] studying Angel diseases. You have a government stipend.
You are a young woman. You have no other choice but to [[dig salt]]. <<audio "helpingothers" stop>>
<<audio "molasseslook" play>>
You realize a woman behind her is digging graves. She opens the salty earth with the weight of her shoulders and pours the sand over crystals she can't see because she was [[blinded by their shards|helping others]] many years earlier. She measures the height of the graves by climbing inside them.
The woman on the ground before you seems to grow more syrupy with each shovel strike. <<audio "hollygrove" stop>>

The woman takes your hand in both of hers, rubbing your knuckles with her thumb. She tells you she's sorry, but she's happy to have you. She's one of the oldest women here, one who's managed to survive the longest, despite her Body. The women call her [[Anemone]]. <<audio "engineer" stop>>

Red silk makes red scarves, red ties, the red seat covers to red automobiles. You draw up plans to expand the known groundwater reservoir into a kind of dome, the roof lined with sugar seeds and lines of twine.
New women arrive to work the reservoir, stripping the [[sugar silk]] from the ceiling by suspending themselves from hooks. They wear leather armor, dreading the day they receive their final needlestick. <<audio "water" stop>>

That silk damages the salt and the women who chip the salt. Destiny demand it gone. You call in carpenters and cement mixers. The carpenters build a deck over the groundwater, and the cement coats it so none can escape.
You brush off your hands after your good work. The salt is no longer contaminated by silk. The women no longer get welts and become immobile. You leave them plunging their picks into the ground. The woman you met before, the victim of Dustcreep, cannot be called a survivor.

The first change is the depth. Tumbling into the earth, the excavators careen through all crystal in their way. Every woman becomes a sorter, smearing their fingers through piles of matter, sifting and crumbling and splattering dust.
One of the drills strikes a new water source, hot and molten. The water sweeps through the mines, fogging the polished quartz, dissolving into sweet saline.
The women who cannot leave, drown. The women who can leave, starve.

There is an inherent scream to the process. A shrill moan.
The berries and leaves of the holly slough off. Then the thorns. The threaded bark of the curved vines.

The women weep. The bones of Holly, the bones of Holly. She is [[bare]] in the earth.<<audio "howlingdogs" stop>>
<<audio "bare" play>>
Over weeks, the sugar melts, paving the landscape in a sweet icefield. This is Her glacial kindness, Her angelical understanding. The mine becomes coated in the liquid, becomes sealed like an antechamber. The women with Dustcreep remain inside. The women diseaseless watch listlessly from the outside, as the Dustcreep turns them to liquid, then to crystal.
The sugar is impenetrable. The mine is forever coffined in sweet.

Metal fingers serenade with the scrape of iron on stone, grinding down the corroded folding tables holding bins of salt inches deep. It spins like a moth, rolling through incantations, beeping salt, sugar, quartz, salt, sugar.
The machine is quick, quicker than the most experienced salt-plucker. The women break their backs to keep up, to keep fattening the machine with more and more crystalmeal.
Eventually the women who chip the walls of the mine into fine gradations, fed like spools of ribbon between the machine's fingers, become machines as well, exoskeletons with lightguns that pierce the crystal caverns in goreless arrays. Tessellations of stone cascade to the ground and more tiny machines sweep and corral them into boxes for the sorting machines.
The mines no longer hum with life. You don't know where the women went.

In a few months, the quartz spikes jutting through the pillar are cut into flat sheets and imbedded in thin gold watches, where they vibrate with manmade frequency. The women wring their rags and ask what to do, then, with their time, the time that they aren't carving rock or sorting mineral. You told them they could rest. They said, really? Really?

You feel [[sick]].

They say change starts from the ground up.
You tell Ferrous to [[stop visiting the quartz]].
You tell Ferrous you two should [[work together]], only mining from one leg a day.
You tell Ferrous you two should put in a [[complaint]] about the legs with needlebugs.
You ask Ferrous about her [[family]].
Your nose starts running pink.<<audio "cando" stop>>
<<audio "stopvisiting" play>>
You notice many of the oldest women do not worship. To stop worshipping is to savor your hands. To love your time.
The two of you spread the message. Women throw away their rags. Their hands heal. Their work is [[less tiring, more productive]]. They chat and laugh and storytell between pickaxe strikes, between licks of salt. <<audio "cando" stop>>
<<audio "worktogether" play>>
The structure of the mine's work changes. In the morning, the women decide on which leg you will excavate based on Ferrous' and your schedule. The women help each other, each working half as much, resting twice as much, getting just as much done.
The owners of the mine are impressed with you. You [[leave]] the salt mine behind.<<audio "disaster" stop>>
<<audio "sick" play>>
Your tears are [[pink|disaster]]. You begin to Dustcreep. Anemone apologizes. But it means you can Feel. <<audio "cando" stop>>
<<audio "complaint" play>>
The owners of the mine heed your complaint, surprisingly. They send an [[engineer|yeah]] to deal with the needlebugs. You see the construction in your shopping cart trips.<<audio "cando" stop>>
<<audio "family" play>>
Ferrous is surprised by your question. She has a young daughter at home. Less than two years old. She gave birth right before she came here.
You ask her why she isn't there, at home. What made the mine the right choice.
She says it was the only way. Her aunt is taking care of her daughter. Her aunt is the [[only woman]] in her family that wasn't killed by the mine. <<audio "stopvisiting" stop>>
<<audio "tiringproductive" play>>
But the scars of worship are still there. The women still get Angel diseases. Still die of overwork and starvation. They do not know they shouldn't.
The change is positive, but is it change?
You die of dehydration caused by Dustcreep within the year.

You enter a different kind of mine, a large gray building with few windows. You work faithfully, brainmachine work, until they realize you have Dustcreep.
You are back in the mine. Most of the women you knew from before are dead. Ferrous, too. Your system has devolved into a competition, seeing who can clear the most salt the fastest.
In three months, you die of exhaustion.

<<audio "yeah" play>>
The engineer calls in carpenters and cement mixers. The carpenters build a deck over the groundwater, and the cement coats it so none can escape.
The salt is no longer contaminated by silk. The women no longer get welts and become immobile. Nothing else changes.
Anemone teaches you how to live with Dustcreep, and you continue to work the mine.

<<audio "onlywoman" play>>
You wonder how many other women have families at home. You ask around. You discover the truth. Anemone has four grown daughters. Most of the women in the sortspace are the last of their siblings, taking care of gaggles of nieces and nephews. The women in leg six are all widows. The women in leg four care for their elderly parents.
So on, and [[so forth]]. <<audio "onlywoman" stop>>
<<audio "familiestogether" stop>>
<<audio "soforth" play>>
You wonder what you could all do together. If you could pool your money to purchase the holly fields, the gravesites, the flooded tunnels. If you could care for [[your families together]]. If you could build homes, villages, tiny schools with tiny chalkboards. You can read and write. Anemone knows statistics. Ferrous can weld.
There is a [[world]] to be built here. A real, possible, tangible world. The women cry pink tears. <<audio "soforth" stop>>
<<audio "familiestogether" play>>
A hundred families, all under one roof! Imagine being a child! A hundred people who all love you unconditionally! A hundred mothers! A hundred siblings! Growing up! A hundred friends! A hundred lovers!
You can imagine being overwhelmed. But a [[good|so forth]] kind of overwhelmed. <<audio "soforth" stop>>
<<audio "world" play>>
You sneakily hoard money. Women pass you cash inside their rags. You approach the owners about buying the holly field. They are curious, but pass it off without many questions. It is just holly, and you are just one woman.
The money continues circulating. After a few months, there is a noticeable dent in the holly where new houses have gone up, slanted shacks billowing smoke, cozy and heartfelt. After a few years, the mine is empty, and the holly is full. Children laugh among the bows. They call you Ghosttown. You sell sugar, and live long.
