Black Warrior Review is pleased to announce we will be reading fiction, nonfiction, and poetry submissions for our first ever online edition during the month of October. Submissions open October 1st and close November 1st.

The theme for our online issue is havens. We want to see writing that addresses how the places we inhabit enrich or complicate our sense of community and belonging. We value experimentations and idiosyncratic voices that interrupt expectation. By whatever means feel most urgent to you as a writer, we want to see geographies and lineages on the page which actively question how we make our own shape in the world.

We are interested in work that explores the meaning of safety and inclusion in imagined futures or remembered pasts. The themes for our print editions this year have been regeneration (44.1) and transformation (44.2) as ways to envision a radical mode of resistance and care within our shared communities. Keeping with a similar vision for our online edition, we want to know—how might we continue living in and caring for the places we hold most dear, and how might we create these places to begin with?

We ask that fiction and nonfiction submissions be no longer than 4,000 words. Please query for longer works. Include up to three pieces of flash prose (under 1,000 words each) in a single entry. Include 3-4 poems in a single submission. Poems should be submitted in one document, with the titles separated by commas in the “Submission Title” field. You may abbreviate the titles if they do not fit.

Submissions are accepted only through Submittable at All mailed submissions will be recycled unread, and unsolicited email submissions will not be considered.

There is a $3 submission fee. The fee has been established solely to pay contributors. All submission fees paid for this reading period will be distributed directly back to the authors we publish. Contributors to BWR’s online edition will receive a nominal lump-sum fee, determined by number of pages, for all works published.

Rights revert to author upon publication; please credit Black Warrior Review with first publication if the work is republished elsewhere.

We encourage you to read Black Warrior Review before submitting. Sample issues are available for $12; one-year subscriptions for $20.

The average response time for online edition submissions will be about 1-3 months. If you have not received a response after 3 months, please check on the status of your submission in Submittable. If you encounter any problems, email us at

Please wait one month after receiving a response to submit again.
